Our National History

Big Brothers Big Sisters began at the turn of the century, when concerned citizens in many American cities organized programs to stem the rising tide of juvenile delinquency, and to help children who had come before the courts.

Over the years, the approach increasingly shifted from intervention to prevention. In 1917, Big Brother and Big Sister groups had spread to so many communities that a national organization, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Federation, was organized. The federation existed until 1937, when it became a victim of the Depression.

In 1945, a national federation for Big Brothers agencies, Big Brothers of America – was formed. A similar organization Big Sisters International, was formed in 1970 to serve Big Sisters agencies.

The National Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of American first met on June 18, 1977, in Orlando, Florida. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America obtained congressional approval of the merger of its constituent corporations on November 11, 1977.

Our Local History

A Big Brothers program began in the 1950’s only to close shortly thereafter. A second attempt was made in the 70’s where separate Big Brothers and Big Sisters agencies were started. In the mid-1980’s, the Big Brothers and Big Sister agencies were joined and because of financial instability, became a part of Catholic Charities, an umbrella organization.

In June 1997, the local program gained its independent, stand along agency status and became officially, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeast Louisiana.

Today, our budget is $750,000 and we are on track to serving over 1000 children through one to one matching relationships by December 31, 2008.

We are the acknowledged leader in building professionally-supported, dynamic relationships which unite children with committed volunteers, primarily on a one-to-one basis.
